The SIRIC label
Since 2011, the French National Cancer Institute (Institut National du Cancer, INCa) has implemented a competitive policy for labeling Integrated Cancer Research Sites (Sites de Recherche Intégrée sur le Cancer, SIRIC), which continued with a second wave of labeling in 2018. Their objective was to provide translational cancer research with new operational conditions to optimize and accelerate the production of new knowledge, and to promote its dissemination and application in cancer care.
SIRICs have been recognized as “flagship programs for integrated research and fostering cross-cutting coordination” in the conclusions of the evaluation of the 3rd Cancer Plan by the IGAS/IGESR Mission. The visibility of SIRICs and their capacity for integration and collaboration are considered major successes of previous Cancer Plans, embodying the realization of translational research by bringing clinicians and researchers together on shared topics. SIRICs are structured and organized tools designed to efficiently address the challenges of research in the new Stratégie décennale de lutte contre les cancers 2021-2030.
« Integration is defined by the sharing of research questions and objectives among different disciplines, aimed at collaboratively developing synergistic programs. The ultimate goal is to improve the care of patients with cancer. ».
The 2023-2027 labeling
Following a national call for applications launched by INCa in May 2022, and after reviewing 14 proposals by an international committee, INCa renewed the labeling of seven SIRICs and awarded a new label to one additional SIRIC. Five of these are located in Île-de-France, while only three SIRICs were labeled outside this region, including SIRIC ILIAD.
The SIRIC label is granted for a period of five years and is supported by multiple funding sources.
